Canada's Mental Health Lifeline: Get Help Now with 9-8-8

What is 9-8-8 and How Can It Help?

In November 2023, Canada took a significant step towards prioritizing mental health by launching a nationwide crisis hotline – 988. This easy-to-remember number provides immediate support for people experiencing mental health distress or thinking about suicide. Important Note: 9-8-8 is not a replacement for emergency services. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger of harming themselves or others, call 911.

Types of Support Offered by Canada's 988 Crisis Hotline

The 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline connects callers with trained responders who specialize in crisis and suicide assessment and intervention. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or severe distress, call or text 988 immediately for support.

  1. Support during a crisis: Trained professionals will listen without judgment and provide de-escalation techniques during a mental health crisis.

  2. Information and referrals to services: They can offer information on mental health resources and connect you with appropriate services in your area, such as therapists or support groups.

Can I Call 9-8-8 for Someone Else?

988 staff will support the caller. If you're concerned about a loved one struggling with a mental health crisis, you can call 988 for support. Explain the situation to the responder, and see how they can best support you.

The Importance of Mental Health Support: Reducing Stigma and Seeking Help

1 in 3 Canadians will experience a mental health issue in any given year. 988 provides a resource for those experiencing mental health crises, offering a safe space to connect with support and potentially life-saving intervention.
